Indian Railways is one of the largest railway networks in the world. It connects people from different parts of the country. To make the journey more comfortable and modern, the government has started a new scheme to improve railway stations across India.
This new initiative is called the Amrit Bharat Station Yojana. The aim of this scheme is to develop and modernize railway stations by adding new facilities and making them more passenger-friendly. It is a long-term plan to make railway stations clean, safe, and modern, while also showcasing local culture.
What is Amrit Bharat Station Yojana?
The Amrit Bharat Station Yojana was started in 2023 by the Ministry of Railways. It focuses on upgrading more than 1,300 railway stations across India. These upgrades are not just for large stations but also include small and medium-sized ones.
The goal is to give a better travel experience to passengers by improving station buildings, waiting areas, restrooms, and platforms. The scheme is also designed to make the stations more connected to local culture and traditions, so they reflect the identity of the place where they are located.
The work under this scheme is being done in several stages. This step-by-step approach helps in planning properly for each station. Depending on the size and condition of the station, the upgrades are carried out in a way that causes minimum inconvenience to passengers.
Main Improvements and Passenger Services
Better Facilities for Passengers
The scheme includes many useful changes to make travel easier and more relaxing. Passengers will get cleaner and more spacious waiting halls with better seating. There will be improved toilets that are maintained regularly. Stations will also have free Wi-Fi services, places to eat, and small shopping areas.
At some stations, children’s play areas and comfortable lounges for premium passengers are also being added. These upgrades will help all types of travellers, including families, elderly people, and business travellers.
Changes in Infrastructure
Apart from improving the look and comfort of stations, the physical structure is also being developed. New lifts and escalators are being added to help people move easily, especially those with luggage or physical difficulties.
Foot overbridges and subways are being built for safe crossing between platforms. Platforms are being expanded so that longer trains can be handled. Signboards and lighting are also being improved to help people find their way without confusion.
Blend of Culture and Modernity
One special part of this scheme is the focus on culture. Each station will reflect the local art, architecture, and traditions of the area it belongs to. This will not only make the stations beautiful but also give a sense of pride to the local people and attract tourists.
Special Focus on Accessibility and Safety
- Helping Differently-Abled Passengers: The scheme makes sure that railway stations are easy to use for everyone, including people with disabilities. Ramps and paths with guiding tiles are being built for smooth movement. Signboards in Braille and sound-based alerts will help blind and low-vision passengers. There are also dedicated washrooms and waiting spaces for people. These changes are part of the government’s mission to make public spaces more inclusive for all.
- Safer Spaces for Women: Keeping in mind the safety and comfort of women travelers, the stations will be well-lit and monitored with CCTV cameras. There will be separate waiting areas and washrooms for women. Some stations will also provide vending machines for sanitary products.
Impact on Local Economy and Environment
- Supporting Local Businesses: The development of stations will help nearby areas grow. During construction, many jobs are created, and after the stations are upgraded, local vendors and shopkeepers benefit from more footfall. The ‘One Station One Product’ program is also part of this scheme. It encourages local craftsmen and small businesses to sell their unique products at railway stations. This helps promote traditional arts and crafts.
- Environment-Friendly Steps: The Amrit Bharat Station Yojana also includes steps to protect the environment. Solar panels are being installed at many stations to reduce electricity costs. Water harvesting systems are set up to save water, and eco-friendly materials are used in construction work. To make the surroundings greener, native trees and plants are being planted. The idea is to balance development with care for nature.
Progress So Far
As of 2025, a lot of work has already been completed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated over 100 upgraded stations in different states including Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
These newly improved stations now offer better facilities, cleaner environments, and look more attractive due to cultural themes. The total cost spent on these stations is estimated to be over ₹1,100 crore. More stations are being improved continuously under the same plan.
As more stations are developed under this scheme, train journeys in India are expected to become more pleasant and efficient for everyone. This project marks the beginning of a new chapter in the journey of Indian Railways.
